Home Safety Requires a Fire Plan

Having a fire-safety plan is of utmost importance for your home and family. Getting started can be the hardest part, but takes very little time and provides an added layer of home-safety. Below is a checklist to help you and your loved ones stay safe and secure.

  1. Brainstorm two escape routes that can be achievable from every room in your home. Pinpointing which hallway and exit door can be used,  helps everyone to have a clear understanding of each route.
  2. Pick an outside location of where you will meet in the event a fire occurs. Make sure this location is far enough from your home, but close enough that everyone can get there. A great example would be the neighbor’s house one block away or under the lemon tree near the gate.
  3. Plan everyone’s role. This is really great for families with children. Designate who will grab the pets or who will offer support to any family members with disabilities. By assigning roles like these to those of responsible age, there is less overlap and more time spent getting to safety.
  4. Share your plan with close relatives and caregivers. This gives an added layer of safety to those who frequent your home.
  5. Lastly, practice your plan. This is the fun part. Enjoy the idea of knowing that your family has a strong plan of action.
